To all who have come seeking, to all who want to learn, to those who want to listen to a story of faith, creation, and parenting, welcome.

My name is Arwyn Henry. I’m a mom, a Christian, a scientist. I love to adventure in the outdoors. Waterfalls are my absolute favorite, but I find all water in nature inspires me and brings me peace.  I am an advocate for protecting God’s creation. I was very young when this journey began, and it will take me many posts to unwrap all the layers of pilgrimage. My life roots run deep both in faith and in nature. My most formative young years were spent in and around Yellowstone National Park. Within those times, I went to many a church service on the balcony of the Old Faithful Inn. There was never a point in my life where I questioned whether caring for the environment belonged in my life of faith, and for that I feel very lucky.

My roots to climate change issues run deep in other ways. An early adopter, my dad installed renewable energy on our property prior to 2000 and I found it fascinating. Solar panels, a wind turbine and a water turbine, guaranteed we had electricity even when the power went out. He was a pioneer in net metering in the state of Montana and has continued to add capacity over the years. Yet, his reasons were financial not faith based. Still, the impact was strong enough for high school me to write a research paper on renewable energy generation.

When I went to college, I did not know what I wanted to study, which is remarkable when you look at my life as a whole. I naturally fell into biology and loved every minute of it. I was blessed to go to Costa Rica twice, once for research, and once as a study abroad student. Costa Rica has long been ahead of the curve in developing ecotourism, using renewable energy, and protecting their natural resources. It was a wonderful place to deepen my appreciation for creation.

As an adult, I now see that my passion for protecting, reconciling, and restoring the planet come from two directions. The wilderness that I love is threatened by our changing climate and the more common extreme weather events we are already experiencing. Such places point us to God’s creativity, create awe, and inspire us to worship him. Equally valuable, I seek kindness and justice for the poor and vulnerable living on our planet. He asks us to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and clothe the naked. He desires we care for the widow, orphan, and stranger. This extends to protecting drinking water supplies, establishing sustainable and regenerative food systems, and ensuring everyone has safe air to breathe, among other things.

Now, I am a mom to a wonderfully innocent little boy. I can no longer sit on the sideline and let others write our future. I yearn to be able to say to him in 10, 20, 30 years that I did not remain silent. I used my voice to advocate in order to give him the best future possible. I hope that my voice will make a difference, even to just one.

Writing is where I struggle most in school, but I am learning to be a storyteller. There will be times these essays may feel highly scientific. Blame my analytical mind. I’ve spent many years making some of these arguments in my head. I read widely and regularly on many of the topics that I’ll cover. Some essays will lean heavily into my new role as mom. (Let’s be honest, my brain spends hours in that role these days.) Most, but not all, will have connections to faith. I do not claim to be a theologian, but I have found many pastors to be in agreement with my perspectives and connections. Some essays will offer resources and further reading for those who want to know more. A full list can be found on my website (in development). Some essays may make you uncomfortable. I accept that. I acknowledge that personal beliefs about economics, politics, and even theology, have interwoven to create an individuals’ stance on this issue. Untangling and dismantling these many threads can be uncomfortable. It is work that not everyone is ready to do. But if you are ready, join me on this journey.
